Gaining

New strategy

I was going to wait until the end of the month to weigh myself. The plan is to do it on the first of every month.

Well the clothes I've bought recently because I grew out of my other ones are starting to get tight. Namely the pants. I got them with the idea of growing into them.

So I got on the scale this morning and I'm 226lbs. I've gained 13lbs this month and there's still 11 days to go. Overall I'm up 32lbs since July. Too much. I need to slow down.

I still want to gain weight, but not this quickly. So I'm changing my eating habits. Fewer trips to fast food joints and just eating better in general.

Today:
Breakfast
Granola & milk: 300 cals
Sourdough toast: 260 cals
Peanut butter: 360 cals
Apple: 50 cals
=970 cals

Lunch:
4 scrambled eggs: 280 cals
Cheese: 120 cals
Bagel: 210 cals
Butter: 140 cals
Banana: 80 cals
=830 cals

I'm at 1800 cals...kind of full but not stuffed.

I plan on having peanuts as a snack for 310 cals (maybe more depending on how much I have).

Dinner is chicken stir fry. Not sure how much that will be yet, but I will count the chicken breast, brown rice and teriyaki sauce. The veggies in there won't add up to much...maybe another 100 cals.

Perhaps another snack on top of that.

Does anybody have any thoughts or suggestions on this new strategy?

Had the peanuts (1.5 servings) 465 cals

Wendy's Frosty: 500 cals

Stir Fry: 400 cals (eating it in a bit)

My total for the day will be 3165 calories.

Still more than I should be eating, but its better food...well except for the Frosty lol.

I do feel fuller than I have been without being stuffed.

Gotta keep this up...and maybe get even better...

thoughts?

If health is a priority, I would add more fruits and vegetables as well - you could add fruit to your granola and vegetables to your scrambled eggs, for instance. It won't significantly raise the calories that you're consuming, though it could make you fuller faster and give you less desire to continue eating. Just a thought.

Thanks Forever FFA! I do like spinach in my eggs, but I didn't have any. There is carrots and broccoli in the stir fry. But I will try to get more F&V in there.

Edit: Just to clarify what I mean by more fruit, you want something with more vitamins than apples and bananas typically deliver. Things like berries, kiwis, citrus fruits, and mangos.

But doesn't an apple a day keep the doctor away?!?!

I like berries, but they haven't looked great recently at the store and they're stupid expensive.

Apples aren't a terrible choice but it's still important to change things up to avoid deficiencies. Off the top of my head, you weren't getting much vitamin C, since I'm assuming the broccoli in the stir fry wasn't raw.

You're right about the berries, especially since they're out of season in these parts of the world now. You could experiment with different types of frozen fruits - the texture can be iffy, but they're cheaper and good mixed in yogurt/smoothies/desserts.

Citrus season is coming soon, and bags of oranges can also be bought pretty cheap then.

Another generally affordable option is raw bell pepper (if you like it). I find it good chopped up in pasta salad or dipped in guacamole or hummus as a snack.

NEVER GUACAMOLE haha. I've tried to like it, but I can't do it. I just don't like avocados. I know I'm in the minority on that one! I'll eat just about anything else.

Thanks again for the tips. Like I said, I still want to gain. I just want to do it smarter. At the pace I'm going, I'd reach my goal next year. I don't want to do that. I'm hoping to spread the gain out over the course of a few years.

You're welcome! The best thing to do is experiment with variety and see what you like. The good thing about eating healthier is that it can always be adapted to whatever your weight goals are.

I've "lost" 4lbs so far. I imagine most of that was just from the excesses from last weekend. But that still means I'm up 28lbs since July.

Seeing those numbers climb like that is fascinating and scary at the same time. What it did do is get me to a point that it clicked in my head that I need to slow down. I will be eating healthier but continuing my journey! Onwards and UPWARDS!
